SDGs take centre stage as UNIC Lagos marks rural women day at Epe

On Thursday 15 October 2015, Nigeria joined the rest of the world to observe the International Day for Rural Women as officials of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Lagos and partners: CSNews and Human and Environmental Agenda (HEDA), travelled over 80 kilometers to Ebute-Afuye, a fishing settlement in Epe Local Government Area (LGA) of Lagos State to engage with women in the community.
Addressing the women numbering one hundred and fifty-two (152), the Director of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Lagos, Mr Ronald Kayanja, noted that women remained a priority group to the United Nations and that rural women are the backbone of sustainable livelihoods as they provide food security for their families and communities.Epe- Ronald speaks
Presenting the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message in Yoruba language, the National Information Officer of UNIC Lagos, Mr Oluseyi Soremekun noted that rural women suffer disproportionately from poverty, and face multiple forms of discrimination, violence and insecurity.
Epe - seyi and SDGs“The time has come to turn that around”, the message continued, “The new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have gender equality and women’s empowerment at their core. Indeed, rural women are critical to the success of almost all of the 17 SDGs.”
The National Information Officer later introduced to the women, the SDGs in Yoruba language after which the women staged a fish exhibition while a health official gave them a health talk.Epe - cross-section
Earlier, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule represented by the Director of Finance and Administration, Office of the Deputy Governor, Mrs Yetunde Odejayi, reiterated government’s commitment to developing the rural areas and making life better for rural women.
Epe - Fish exhibitionThe programme, facilitated by Dr Naimah Balogun, an intern with UNIC Lagos, ended with the distribution of school bags, rain coats, mathematical sets and pencil cases provided by MTN Nigeria, to the women for the use of their children.
